Fun Facts:
Signet rings have been around  for thousands of years. Their first use seems to date back to ancient Egypt, more than 4,000 years ago. Many signet rings were discovered in the tombs of pharaohs and other senior officials. These rings were used to signify authority and to seal business transactions.
Each signet was unique and recognizable by all. The designs consisted of symbols dedicated to nature and ancient gods.
The  term "signet" or "seal", comes from the Latin “sigillum” ("seal"), and dates back to the second half of the thirteenth century. During the thirteenth century signet rings saw a revival in popularity, and were a handy signature alternative in a time when few people could write.
When Western civilization became more literate, the use of the signet rings to seal important documents was replaced by handwritten signatures. The ring, devoid of practical use, then became more symbolic or identificatory. It became fashionable to engrave family crests or initials on the rings. In the 19th and early 20th century they became popular amongst the educated elite and were engraved with school or fraternal emblems.
Today the rings are fashionable historical relics.
