Historians are mixed on the legitimacy of suffragette jewelry; however, we love a good story and this color combo, so we'll tell this version: It was popular in England in the early 1900's for early suffragette women to wear the colors green (peridot/emeralds) white (pearl) and violet ( rubies/ garnet ) to show their support for the early feminist movement. Many pins and jewelry of the period are comprised of these colors, and women wore them as secret symbols of their allegiance to the movement. The purple, or violet was said to symbolize the royal blood that runs through the veins of all suffragettes, white symbolized purity in the home and in public, and green was an emblem of spring and hope. It's also believed to stand for (G)ive (W)omen (V)otes.
